Research- Editing Miss B

 Editing

straight cut- when one shot is moved to another shot in an edit and it does not confuse the audience.
fade to black- when one shot goes/ moves into another, and there is a black filter in-between. It is created to give the audience a time to think.
wipe out- when the shot slides into another. it is usually in cartoons. One of the most popular films they were used in is the Star Wars series.
dissolve- when one shot disintegrates into another. The length of the fade can be used to symbolize different things.
reaction shot- any shots but it is often used as a cut-away in which a subject reacts to a pervious shot

180 degrees rule- imagine a hypothetical line drawn between two or more actors. The camera must not shoot on the other side of the line this is because it can confuse the audience and will nit be consisted to the 180 degrees rule.

shot revered shot- when the camera is a simple cut and when the characters are looking at each so since they are facing in opposite directions, the viewer assume that they are looking at the other. shots are mainly in classical film.

jump cut- a drastic camera movement that is noticeable to the eye. This type of edit gives the effect of jumping forwards in time. It is a manipulation of temporal space using the duration of a single shot, and fracturing the duration to move the audience ahead.

Examples of  editing in thriller films:

Montage is the speed of editing which shows the main part of the scene.  A montage has been shown in 'Psycho' shower scene as the antagonist is being killed by a unknown murderer. The shots quickly move to anther shot which creates tension and suspense towards the audience also this creates curiosity as the audience want to see more. This is conventional to a thriller genre as montage is suppose to create tension and also excitements towards the audience.

Shot reverse shot will be used

Research Sound - Mr.S

Sound

Sound creates more understanding toward the audience it give an ides about the characters and there emotions. Its also used to create a response from the audience. There is lots of different type of sound in films for example parallel sounds and resent sound differently. Sound is so important to film.

There are lots of type of sound to represent the film.

Diegetic sound-which is part of the film world e.g.  phone ringing, jukebox, microwave. It an be on or off screen which it has noise audible to the character.

Non-diegetic sound- it is not part of the film world for example soundtrack, voice over, sound effect  also the results of non-diegtic sound make the audience want to watch the film.

On screen sound- you can see where the sound is coming from for example radio, car etc.....
We know that a lot of sounds are represented coming from the story world, and either are represented as they are coming from outside worlds. An example of a sound is "Fury", you can see where the sound is coming form like the tanks are being fired and the characters are screaming and shouting. The on screen sound in this scene allows the audience to understand that the characters are in a war as there are equipment that represent it, and also the screaming and shouting could also show that they are in danger.

Off screen sound-  you can see the sound but cant see where its coming from, even if it makes sense to the film for example coughing, traffic sounds, screaming etc.... It is important because

Parallel sound-  it is when the sounds you hear in the film is what you expect to hear. For example a man with a gun shooting someone, you expect to the hear noise of the bullet.

contrapuntal-  it is when the sound does not match the expectations if what you are viewing for example of this is Jaws. the scene of the beach are accompanied by the contrapuntal sound of the theme tune 'dur dur' which does not fit in with the happy image.

The movie Scream has a lot of tensions. At the first scene the young women starts talking to an unknown man on the phone, at that moment there wasn't any tensions but when the unknown killer come inside the house that when the high pitch music starts to scare us. we expect that high pitch music to happen so it represent as danger. This is called a parallel sound. There was a lot of on screen sound where the popcorn was popping on the stove as we expected that sound to be heard.

Conclusion: i learnt that when making a film it is important that the sound is suitable for the movie. When making the thriller opening scene i need to make sure that the plot does match the sound and also has to build tension so the audience want to watch more. When making the opening scene i will try and include all sounds as they are conventional to a thriller film.

Research Cinematography- Miss B

Cinematography

A cinematography is when you look at the way the shots are taken and how the angle is taken and the movement of the camera. This is the  mainly shots type and camera movements, contrasting a moving image. As a cinematographer they have many responsibilities to insure all those factors are a high stranded of expectations of the director.

Type of cinematography in camera shots:

Close-up:  mainly allows the characters face to be shown such as close up captures the characters reaction or feelings.
Extreme long shots: it's more further away than long shots and its usually when it shows your emotions like when your crying,
Establishing shot: it usually shows a lot in the start of the scene for example a scene in a forest. It is generally  a long- or extreme long shot indicating where of the scene takes place. But a lot of film makers skip the establish shot in order to move the scene quicker.
High angle: is when the camera is placed above the head to make the person look big and makes the person look vulnerable, powerless and can make the moment in the scene very dramatic or if there is someone is at a high level that the person below is talking to.
Low angle: the camera is below the persons foot which makes them look big and dramatic as they talk to someone. This is usually used in movies that include a antagonist that is heroic and confident.
Medium shot- captures the person from head to toe.
Medium close up- This captures  the person from head to chest.

Examples of thriller in camera shots:

This image is a close-up as it is close to the persons face. The reason why this is a close-up  is because  the character is showing his feelings towards the audience so the audience will have sympathy for the characters. This is conventional to a thriller genre as a close-up mainly towards showing a characters feelings or showing their reaction about something.

The low angle shows that the antagonist is confident as he stands on top of a building as his posture is straight and his fist is clenched which makes him look like he is going to defeat the  protagonist. Low lighting makes the antagonist look like a hero who fights to save a victim or society from  the protagonist. This is conventional o a thriller film as the audience will understand that the character is the one with confidence.

The establish shot in the movie 'James Bond Skyfall' helps to create an idea of the whole story and what the audience expect. In this image the antagonist who looks very confident from the way his body language is shown and the costume he is wearing is standing on top of a building where there is lots of buildings. This gives the audience an idea that the genre of the film is thriller/ action/ adventure as it the building portrays it. This is conventional to a thriller as establish shots helps indicate where the scene is taking place.

Camera movements include:

Panning shot: it refers to the rotation in a horizontal plane of a still camera or video camera. It is similar than shaking your head from side to side.
Tilt shot: the camera moves up and down
crane shot - on  a crane, camera movement is flexible and one camera movement.
Zoom- film makers use zoom to capture emotions or they zoom in to an object or a person so it can either makes it look bigger or smaller.
Point of view (POV)- this is when the person talks from his or hers point of view. the scene will usually be a person looking at something and showing its reaction. Sometimes the point-of-view shot is taken over the shoulder of the character (third person), who remains visible on the screen.
Hand held- when the camera moves the person but it shake a lot then when you use a tripod.

The last scene in psycho  there was a zoom movement so it sows the reaction of the character as he was talking to himself. This creates suspense toward the audience as they find out who the murder in the film was. When the character was talking in his head the camera zoomed towards his face so the audience can see bis reaction s he speaks to himself. At the end of the scene we see this devil/monster look on his face as the ending fades away. This is a reason why they used a zoom movement so the audience can see what the man intentions are. This is conventional to a thriller genre as zoom helps the audience understand the characters intentions, feelings and also their reaction towards something.

Conclusions: i have learnt the meaning of cinematography and also done my research on the different angles, shot and movements. This has helped me decide what i should use in my thriller film in order to capture the audience attention.

Sub-genre of thrillers

Thrillers are often mixed with other genres such as crime-thrillers, action-thriller, western-thriller and some people say that spy films are considered as a thriller. For example a crime-thriller is more focus on criminal activities and usually emphasis action over psychological aspect although the film include serial killer, murder and robberies. A sub-genre gives you details on how it should be laid out. Examples of a sub-genre thriller

North by North-West: this is a  mystery film as the character  mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and is pursued across the country while he looks for a way to survive. There are a lot of foreshadowing in the film.

Audience response to thriller?

The response from the audience when watching thriller is very unpredictable some people will respond saying that it makes them fear, anxiety and a lot of tension but others could respond saying it makes them feel questionable, fascinated and excited. Also the audience expect thriller seem realistic and expect things like dark colours and hunted houses, abandoned places and scenes of dark places. I personally love a thriller film when there is high pitch interment to build the tension and make it more scary.

conclusions: Overall thriller is a genre that frightens, excites, thrills, fascinates and brings a lot of tension. In other words its a scary movie. The genre thriller aim is to make sure the audience are engaged to the film and also make sure that the response from the audience is what the film maker wanted them to be thrilled.
