Research- Age certificate- Miss B

Age certificate

The British Board of Film Classification are a organisation who censorship films, video and DVDs within England. they aim is to protect their viewers and provide the information that empowered them and parents to make appropriate viewer decisions for themselves and the people in care. they also make the decision on what is appropriate for the age rating in a film for example strong language, sexual intercourse and religion should be a 18 rating. The importance of the BBFC is that make the parents aware of the information about the film an whether they should let the children watch it. There are different rating based on what is important for the children.

The age certificate "U" means universal. This is suitable for the audience and would not upset a particular child since this is the lower category range. the things that wont include in a "U" film is no bad language but there might be a mild bad language such as "hell or "dammit", violence or threat can not be included in a "U" film, bad behavior which a child might copy, and any reference to drugs. Film like "Frozen and "High School Musical" are a "U" rating films.

A "PG" film stands for parents guidance which means it suitable for the audience but me scene include inappropriate or unsuitable scenes for the children to be watch. So it is the parents job to decide weather their kids should watch it or not. As there are unsuitable scenes for the kids to b watching this means it should be mild for example sex scenes cannot be detailed  for the kids to understand, violence should not also be detailed as it can effect the kids because they might copy it as they don't understand. the ""PG" films such as "E.T" and "Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom" are PG.

A "12A" is suitable or a 12 and over but children under 12 has to be occupied by an adult. A "12A" rating film include things that might upset the younger age that's why a adult has to decide weather it would influence or upset the child. Even if there are scenes that may be inappropriate for a 12 there should not be any type of extreme violence or any signs that can influence children in a bad way. "12A" was a fairly new age rating that came as a result of spider-man (2002) viewers argue that Spiderman was to violent for children and had a controversial narrative, so should be a "PG" rating. Therefor the BBFC gave it a 12. However others complained about Spiderman being a hero for the children so the rating changed to "12A".

A "12" film is occupied by an adult because it isn't generally suitable for a 12 year or younger. Both 12 and 12A rating are similar but 12 is more suitable for the age and older because younger age may get upset. No child that is younger than 12 can rent or buy a 12 rated video. The things that will include is a bad language for example 'shit' is acceptable and violence can be included, but there are inappropriate things that must not include such as nudity, religion  offense, abuse, frequently bad language.

A 15 rating in  film is different than then other ratings below because it includes a lot of adult scenes but it still cannot influence the audience who watch it. There cannot be any discrimination, drugs should not be promoted, violence can be shown but not dwell on injury ans pain, there maybe be use of frequently bad language and nudity can be shown.

A 18 film can be only viewed by 18 and over  because it contains anything that entertains the audience as they are able to cope with exposed things. As an adult you are free to choose their own entertainment such as criminal laws, violence acts, abuse, illegal drugs, cause of harm to the public health or morals, erotic endorse sexual health ans explicit image of sexual activities can be shown. This give you an idea that as an adult you have your own responsibility of taking care of yourself and know what your going to be effected from and what will upset you. An example of a 18 rated movie is "i spit on your grave" because it includes abuse, violence acts, sexual activities and rape.

For a thriller film the age certificate should be 15 or 18 depending on the content. For example a thriller film could include extreme scenes that could affect the age of 15. A thriler tfil

This is mainly about idea that makes the story come together, and also it expresses what ideas or issue are raised within the story. the themes can include type of conflicts. Different genre use different themes in order to relate to there audience. I think when there is a theme in a genre you expect it to match to give it a better understanding for example:

The impact of themes on audience is that they watch a trailer and are able to know the genre so they expect a certain themes in the film. The theme must relate to the genre other wise it will leave the audience confused and wont bring good responds toward the film.

Research- Narrative theory- Miss B

Narrative theory

Narratives theory is a story telling and have different elements in a story to make it organised and meaningful story because if not then the audience will be confused and will not watch the film. When trying to find a meaning within narrative, there are series of code and convention that need to be considered such as characters, structure, connotation denotation and genre. Propps, Todorov, Aristotle, Barthes are very common when making a film because it helps to make it understandable for the audience and just makes sense.
Propp-  the eight characters that propp has made is: The hero- is the person who is the hero for most of the quest and is there to help.  The villain-  the bad person who ruins the quest but at the end is defeated. The donor- is the person who send the quest from a message.  The dispatcher- its the person who tries to at least ruin a part of the quest. The helper- it is the person who gives out important information to the hero and gives the hero equipment to help quest. The false hero- acts as a hero who succeeded the quest.  The princess- the princess is usually the victim. Her father-is the person who tells the hero to get his daughter.

Todorov-  he suggested that stories has equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium (beginning, middle, end) . The 5 stages of conventional narratives are:
1) A state of equilibrium at the outset.
2) A disruption of the equilibrium by some action.
3) A recognition that there has seem a disruption .
4) An attempt to repair the disruption.
5) A reinstatement of the equilibrium.

The structure of the convention narrative is very familiar to the audience and can be applied to many films narratives.

Aristotle: he found out that it is important that ever film has a plot so it arouse emotion from the audience, and this is mainly within tragedy (fear and emotion). Also evoking emotion through the themes.

Barthes:  Barthes suggested that there will be codes to describe the meaning od a text. narrative can be defines by using the following:
  • Symbolic- it is similar to the Semitic code, but it deeper sets of meaning connotation  which it symbolises.
  • Semic-  often additional meaning by way of connotation which the story suggests or  refers to meaning.
  • Culture- understand events which can be recognise as being part of a culture.

Research- Setting and Iconography (Mise En Scene)-Miss B

Setting and Iconography

Setting-  setting is a location where a film is being set and its conventional  to the genre it belongs to, if the setting doesn't go with the film then it will be confusing. Setting is important to thriller because it creates denotation and connotation so it make the move more conventional to its genre. For example a disowned house, abandoned hospital and narrow corridors are a common setting in horror films.

Setting in sub-genre

Action- highway, alleyways, busy roads, office
Sci-fi- outer-space, empty fields, forest, abandoned houses, graveyard
Crime- office, forest, abandoned places, busy roads
Suspense/horror- graveyards, alleyways, haunted houses
Psychological- hospital, abandoned places, narrow corridors

Setting sub-genre: setting in genre depend on there sub genre. For example different horror movies but have different setting like sci-fi film would have its setting outer space or and field,  crime thriller would be in a abandoned place suspense would be in an alleyway, action could be streets and car parks, psychological could be schools and mental institution.

iconography- it is the object that cause significance to the scene. This is conventional to the genre it belongs to because it creates different meaning.  For example there is a narrow corridor that has flashing lights, the audience would connote that as a suspense thriller film. As for when there is a  person sitting on a electric chair  we would connote it as a psychological thriller.

iconography in sub-genre
Action: guns,cars, knife, computer
Sci-fi- technology, creature
Psychological- rope, handcuff, electrical chairs
Crime- police cars, guns, knife,
Horror/suspense- weapons, hidden identities (mask),

In this scene the gun has been use as a iconography. It creates a emotion from the audience to help them understand the characters emotion. The setting of the scene was the office which give the audience an idea that it is a serious situation.

Research-Mise En Scene- costume, hair,make-up, body language and facial expression Miss B

Mise En Scene

When watching a thriller film it is important to represent the character of what the Mise En Scene is expected from them. the elements of Mise En:

costume- it helps the audience understand more about the characters and grab the audience attention to particular personality or traits. Different customer have different representation towards the character for example a antagonist would wear normal clothes or a white clothing which would show that the person is pure and innocent, whereas  a antagonist would wear black clothes and that represent bad. Some protagonist wear something that would hide there identity like a mask or they would pain there face.

Hair and make- up- the appearance is important when creating a character as it affects someone perspective. For example using a dramatic make- up and hair it can convey the seriousness  of the scene. Whereas a person who wears less makeup and has a hairstyle that not dramatic is represented as a innocent character. Different hair and make-up style is represented differently and can make the audience understand who they are.

Body language- a character a action, movement and how they represent themselves is a body language for example use of facial expressions presents  the dynamics of the scene. Sometimes their physical appearance will make the understand who they are. For example a hero would would have a good posture and have his/her head held high. A victim who is a child would be clueless and cry.

The conventional body language of the protagonist is calm. This represents them as a clever and mischievous person because he is wearing suit which is a symbol of knowledge and also he is wearing paint on his face which cover his identity.

The conventional language of the antagonist is that he is confident This represent that he is has power and knows what he is doing as a hero, also the leather and a cloak shows that he is confident. He is wearing a mask to also cover his identity.

Facial expression- the audience understand when they look at the characters face and emotion to  see if it create a meaning  as the character is developing the story by its facial expression and communicate the feelings and thoughts to the audience. A protagonist would be smirking and giving evil eyes but a antagonist would be serious as he/she is in a serious situation.

Research- Mise En Scene- Lighting and Colour- Miss B

LIGHTING AND COLOUR

Lighting is important when creating a film because it conveys the mood and atmosphere. It can be used to guide the audience attention to a particular object,
emotion, person or gesture. Lighting creates more meaning than we think.

Angle lighting:
Under lighting: the lights comes below the person. This tends to have a distrusting affect on the character for example this picture represent the character as a evil person and we can tell because of the lighting.

Top lighting: the lighting comes above highlights the persons features which creates a glamour look.
Or it is used to remove shadows produced by the key lighting. It can also create the illusion of a bright, sunny day. For example the lighting is created for the audience to focus mainly on the  character who died.

Back lighting: it come behind and creates fear or disgust from the character. It is mainly made for horror movies because the lighting create a shadow which makes the character look mysterious, it can also sense a impending doom. For example this image give the audience an idea that the character is evil.

 Types of lightings
Low key- the lighting is dark with small areas of the light, which also creates a shadow. Low key is mainly popular in action films and crime films,
High- key-  lighting appears more natural and realistic to our eyes. high key is horror films and sci-fi.

Colour  -  colour in the scene have different connotation to them and can give different interpretation of scene.

In this scene the colour red was represented is danger, so i knew there will be danger, blood and bad intension. The lighting made it look very scary and mysterious, because there was a lot of shadow. There was a lot of low key lighting. The lighting also bought up tension. The mood created a mysterious and made it look like a stalking obsession type of murder.
