Research Sound - Mr.S

Sound

Sound creates more understanding toward the audience it give an ides about the characters and there emotions. Its also used to create a response from the audience. There is lots of different type of sound in films for example parallel sounds and resent sound differently. Sound is so important to film.

There are lots of type of sound to represent the film.

Diegetic sound-which is part of the film world e.g.  phone ringing, jukebox, microwave. It an be on or off screen which it has noise audible to the character.

Non-diegetic sound- it is not part of the film world for example soundtrack, voice over, sound effect  also the results of non-diegtic sound make the audience want to watch the film.

On screen sound- you can see where the sound is coming from for example radio, car etc.....
We know that a lot of sounds are represented coming from the story world, and either are represented as they are coming from outside worlds. An example of a sound is "Fury", you can see where the sound is coming form like the tanks are being fired and the characters are screaming and shouting.The on screen sound in this scene allows the audience to understand that the characters are in a war as there are equipment that represent it, and also the screaming and shouting could also show that they are in danger.

Off screen sound-  you can see the sound but cant see where its coming from, even if it makes sense to the film for example coughing, traffic sounds, screaming etc.... It is important because

Parallel sound-  it is when the sounds you hear in the film is what you expect to hear. For example a man with a gun shooting someone, you expect to the hear noise of the bullet.

contrapuntal-  it is when the sound does not match the expectations if what you are viewing for example of this is Jaws. the scene of the beach are accompanied by the contrapuntal sound of the theme tune 'dur dur' which does not fit in with the happy image.

The movie Scream has a lot of tensions. At the first scene the young women starts talking to an unknown man on the phone, at that moment there wasn't any tensions but when the unknown killer come inside the house that when the high pitch music starts to scare us. we expect that high pitch music to happen so it represent as danger. This is called a parallel sound. There was a lot of on screen sound where the popcorn was popping on the stove as we expected that sound to be heard.

 Conclusion: i learnt that when making a film it is important that the sound is suitable for the movie.When making the thriller opening scene i need to make sure that the plot does match the sound and also has to build tension so the audience want to watch more. When making the opening scene i will try and include all sounds as they are conventional to a thriller film.

  1. A good post - lots of detail to your understanding.

    To Improve;
    - Any video examples which you could analyse and sat how the different sounds are used?
    - Conclusion - how has what you have learnt going to impact on your own work?
