Thriller makes sure that they keep there audience alert and thrilled. There aim is to keep them on the edge of there seats!!!. But when watching a thriller movie it has to keep building the tension throughout the film. Thriller  includes a lot of things such as the characters are mostly at risk of there own lives. when watching a thriller movie the plot is mainly quickly moving action, danger and high stakes. Movies that aimed to keep the audience thrilled such as seven, psycho, and the cabin in the woods.

Sub-genre of thrillers

Thrillers are often mixed with other genres such as crime-thrillers, action-thriller, western-thriller and some people say that spy films are considered as a thriller. For example a crime-thriller is more focus on criminal activities and usually emphasis action over psychological aspect although the film include serial killer, murder and robberies. A sub-genre gives you details on how it should be laid out. Examples of a sub-genre thriller

North by North-West: this is a  mystery film as the character  mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and is pursued across the country while he looks for a way to survive. There are a lot of foreshadowing in the film.

Black swan:
This is a Drama Thriller. A ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.

Common themes in a thriller:

"I spit on your grave" common themes are Obsession and Revenge. The women gets revenge on a group of men who rape and torture her, as she then plots to kills them in a very slow painful way.

"The tale of two sisters" main common themes are death, tragedy and insanity.  The family is haunted by a tragedy of death within the family.

Death is the main common theme in "Seven" as two detective go on a hunt who uses the seven deadly sins.

Audience response to thriller?

The response from the audience when watching thriller is very unpredictable some people will respond saying that it makes them fear, anxiety and a lot of tension but others could respond saying it makes them feel questionable, fascinated and excited. Also the audience expect thriller seem realistic and expect things like dark colours and hunted houses, abandoned places and scenes of dark places. I personally love a thriller film when there is high pitch interment to build the tension and make it more scary.

conclusions: Overall thriller is a genre that frightens, excites, thrills, fascinates and brings a lot of tension. In other words its a scary movie. The genre thriller aim is to make sure the audience are engaged to the film and also make sure that the response from the audience is what the film maker wanted them to be thrilled.

  1. A good start here, well done. You discuss sub-genres and audience response well.

    To improve;
    -bullet point some more examples of thrillers
    -can you comment on some common themes within thrillers?
    -can you comment on common conventions of thriller films?
    -do you think thrillers 'brainwash' the audience or rather want to play with their state of mind?
