Planning- Micro-elements- Mr.Smith

Cinematography:

1. the first movement will be panning shot as it will be when the professor is sitting at the desk looking a lot a laptop of the women. This will make it look clear as the audience will understand what the professor is looking at and also what is happening in that scene. This will make the audience want to know what is going on as the professor has a good intention and also is the protagonist in the film. But as this makes the audience understand what the professor is doing, they don't know what he is looking at which will create suspense as they want to know more. This is conventional to the thriller genre as it is clear to the audience and also introduces a character.

2. When the professor is observing the women on the laptop i will be using an over the shoulder shot as the audience know what the professor is watching and also let the audience understand the story line as they will learn more abut the demented women. This is conventional to the thriller genre as this will build an understanding about the character.

3. after the over the shoulder shot i will be using close-up shot so the audience could see the demented women reaction to the flashbacks so the audience could see her feelings and emotions and also how her emotions and feelings transforms in each flashbacks. The audience response to that will be sympathy as they know how she ended up in a mental institution.

4. A fade to white will be used when the anti-hero will come back from reality when she had her flashbacks. When she comes back from reality the audience will see her reaction which makes the audience more curious as she feels guilt about her past so we see her current state

5. I will be using a long shot as the anti-hero door opens. This will allow the audience to see door at a full length and also builds tension and excitements as the audience want to see who is opening the door. This is conventional to a thriller genre as this will leave the audience unexpected , shocked and also will leave them will suspense and tension.

6. A point of view will be used when the antagonist founds out about the presence. This creates sympathy to the audience as they know the antagonist is in a difficult situation so the response from the audience will be wanting to know what's going to happen next this is suspense.

7.High angle will be used when the anti-hero finds out that she is pregnant as she is looking at the pregnancy test This will make her look venerable as this is clear to audience that she was in shock as she found out about her pregnancy test and also will make the audience find out what will happened to the anti-hero.

8. Tilt shot will shot is when the antagonist enters the room as the audience see the victim comes back as a ghost. This will create shock an suspense as the scene finally is revealed about what was going on. The anti-hero will feel threatened and scared as the antagonist comes closer towards the anti-hero. This will create a twist in the plot.

9. Extreme long shot will be used when the anti-hero shoots the antagonist. This will leave the audience shocked and confused as the reason but at the same time is clear that the audience understand that the female has been shot. This is conventional to a thriller genre as it is a murder scene which creates a twist and also tension.

Sound:

Sound is important in the film making as it builds tension and also give the audience an understanding about the plot.

1. Diegetic sound is used as when the anti-hero shoots the antagonist. This is because the audience expects to hear the shooting of the gun. The outcome of that will be that the audience is shocked about the shooting scene and also creates suspense and tension as they want to know what happens next. This is conventional to a thriller as you are expected to heart the gun shot.

2. On screen sound will be used when the anti-hero cries. The audience will realize when she cries that she is demonstrating her guilt and shows her emotions as she regretted killing the antagonist. This is conventional to a thriller genre as she needs to cries to shows her emotions.

3. Parallel sound ill be used when the anti-hero and the lover are caught by the antagonist. As the antagonist see her lover with a women she gasps and is in shock. This is conventional to a thriller as this is expected from the antagonist to be in shock and to gasp.

4. Non-diegetics sound used as there will be soundtracks used in the fill as the antagonist approaches to the anti-hero in the mental institution room. This demonstrates that the anti-hero is threatened by the antagonist as the anti-hero moves away. This is clear that the antagonist comes to get revenge. This is conventional to a thriller genre as the non-diegetic sounds helps to build up the tension and suspense in the scene and also gets the audience curious as the scene ends.

5. Off screen sound will be used when the characters are out in public and the traffic sound will be used to make the audience know that they are out on the streets. This is conventional a thriller genre as the audience will have a connection as some may have had a relationship out of on the streets.

Editing is important hen creating a film as you will need to ensure that each shot are done very well and may include different shots and make sure the audience will have a the attention of the editing is suppose to attract them with clear understanding.

1. Slow editing will be used when the antagonist enters the room slowly as this will create tension and feel very chilling because the audience don't know what will happen next. This is conventional to a thriller genre as this is a suspense feeling and is suppose to be exciting as the audience doesn't know what is going to happen next.

2. Reaction shot will be used when the antagonist catches her lover with a women. The audience will see the shock on the antagonist face and the audience will understand what is going on because of her reaction. The audience will know what is going on and give sympathy towards the antagonist as some may relate to her.

3. shot reverse shot will be when the antagonist walks toward the room. This allows the audience to see both characters to see the emotions and reaction as this will create even more tension. This is conventional o a thriller as  this will attract the audience will want to find out more

4. Fade to white will be used when the anti-hero is having flashbacks. This give the audience an idea of why she is in a metal institution and what has happened to her. They will understand her ituatuion and also connect with her as she expresses her feelings. This is conventional to a thriller genre as this will help the audience understand what is going on i the plot and also help the audience to aviod any confusion.

5. Fast editing will be used when the women is in the plain white room acting very dementaed as her mind isn't in the right set. This will bring a connection towards the audience as she exprersses her feelings by acting i out. This is conventional to a thriller genre as fast editing helps to brig out tension and suspense.

Conclusion

I have understood the micro-elements (cinematography, sounds, editing) is important when creating a film as it helps to create feelings towards the audience such as suspense which will b the outcoe of our film towards the audience, We will be including these thongs which will be conventional to a thriller genre.

Planning-Mise En Scene-Mr Smith

Setting:

Our group have decided that we will have three different location at school, falcon street and Hobby street. The school setting will be when The pregnant women find out that weather she is pregnant or not. The Hobby street will be when the shooting scene will happen and the Falcon Street will be when the antagonist founds out that her lover is having an affair. We will also be shooting in school. It will be a white small room as that represents a mental institution. That setting will be shot when the anti-hero is acting strangely. And also when the antagonist comes back as a ghost and comes towards the anti-hero. These setting will all represent each scene.

Costume, Hair and Make-up:

The anti- hero will be dressed in grey normal top as that will represent her innocence's but also show the audience that she has a split personality.  The anti-hero make-up will be neutral in different scenes as that will also show her that she might be a victim. The hair will in different scenes for example the first flashback will be she is happy about her flashback so her make-up will be neutral and hair will be in a ponytail, then when she comes back from the flash back her hair is messy/frizzy and her mascara and eyeliner will be smudges. The second flashback will when she is a caught with a affair her hair will be in a bun and make up will be simple, then when she comes back from that flashback her hair will still be frizzy/messy and mascara and eyeliners will be smudged and smeared down her face from the crying. The last flashback will be when she kills the antagonist her make-up will look like she is tired and her hair won be neat, when she comes back from that flashback her will still look messy and her make-up will be smeared all over her face from he crying. The professor will wear normal clothing and a white lab coat, This is will represents his good intention and that the professor is intelligent. The hair will be messy and shot and will have a clear face. The antagonist will have normal clothing during the flashbacks, will having different hair styles during the flashback and also have neutral make-up. But when she comes back as a ghost and enters the room she wears a white long dress and will have long messy hair that will partly cover her face, her make up will be pale with under bag and her eyes will look like blood which will leave the audience with suspense.

Lighting:

The lighting we will be using will consist with low key, under tone and black and white flashes. The first scene we will be using under lighting to make the audience see the scene more clear and what is happening to the anti-hero as she behaves strange, this will also be a low lighting when the protagonist looks at the laptop as he is observing the anti-hero. The lighting will also show the protagonist intention that he does not want to harm the women but wants to observe the anti-hero. There will be another low lighting key when the anti-hero behavior changes to demonstrate her feelings toward the audience to make it clear as she goes into flashback to show how she was in a metal institution.

Iconography:

There will be different iconography to represent what is going on in each scene. In the first scene there will be a desk, stationary, laptop that  suggests that the protagonist has Knowledge  and is observing something when he is looking at the laptop. The professor also has images of a women n the  background. This makes he audience question what the man is observing and why. In a white plain room there is a demented women with a tray that include a glass of water and half eaten food. This represents that the women is to disturbed to be eating food and also the chair that is going to support the tray. The lack of iconography kin this scene helps the audience focus ore on the character the  whats is around character. The anti-hero will have flashbacks. The first flashback iconography is the anti-hero lover handing a rose. The audience understand that they are in a relationship but also see the antagonist finding out her lover is cheating and that will create tension. The second flashback is   the anti-hero finding out she is  pregnant when she is in the bathroom holding a pregnant test. pregnancy test as she finds out that she is pregnant. The final flash back will be the anti-hero shooting the antagonist with a gun. This is unexpected form the audience  which creates tension and suspense.

Body language and Facial expression

The anti-hero has different body language and facial expression. When the anti-hero is in the metal institution her body language is very unstable as she is jumping around and screaming whereas her facial expression is her crying and very confusing to the audience as they don't know what to expect. The ant-hero first flashback her body language is very calm and she has a good posture. The anti-hero facial expression is happy ass that shows she is in a happy relationship with her boyfriend but when  she is caught by the antagonist she becomes worried. The second flashback is when she does a pregnancy test and founds out she is pregnant, Her facial expression is extremely happy as she founds out she s pregnant but also crying as it is unexpected for her. The body language of the anti-hero is she is slouching as she is looking at the pregnancy test. The final flashback the anti-hero body language is her posture is very slouched posture as she murdered the antagonist. The anti-hero facial expression is very worries and scared as she comes to milling the antagonist
The professor body language is a good posture when looking at the laptop and and having a confused and also curious facial expression as he is looking at the laptop. The response from the audience is curiosity as they want to know what the professor is looking at.
The antagonist facial expression will be shock as she finds out her lover is cheating and also her body language will be very still as she is shock and doesn't know what to do. When  the shooting scene happens the antagonist will be killed so she doesn't really have a facial expression just still face,  as this will make it clear that she is dead, her body language will be also still/frozen as she is represented as a dead women.

Conclusion:

I have included each elements that will be in my thriller. When my group and i make our film we will be looking back at this so we make sure we include everything. What i have included in this post is what my group and i have discussed in detail making sure that it will attract the audience attention by Creating suspense and excitement.

Planning- Opening scene narration-Miss B

When we decided that we finials our narration we wrote down a clear structure on how the film will officially be like, as without a clear structure the audience will not understand the story line and wouldn't want too continue watching the film.

Start: A women who is pregnant (3-5 months) is going through a difficult stage as she is mentally disturbed. There is a professor who is observing her mental state as she is jumping about, clutching her stomach crying, laughing and screaming. The professor  notice that her behavior is getting worse and worse as she screams. The setting will be in a white room which represents her innocents and also could mean she is a victim of something bad. the costume of the pregnant women is she will be wearing white dress which could also represent that she is innocent and her being in a mental hospital.

Middle: When the women behavior starts getting worse she starts seeing flashbacks of her pregnancy. The first flashback was her finding out the pregnancy and was in a very happy situation and is with the baby father as she holds her tummy. The second flashback is the man who is in a relationship with the pregnant women sees her boy-friend/ husband kissing another women and is very upset/jealous. The last flashback is that the pregnant women kills the women who was involved with the cheating. The reason why she killed the women was because she didn't want anything interfering with her relationship with the man. In each flash the pregnant women knows she has done a bad things and contains screaming and crying.

End: When the flashback ends the pregnant women sees the doors open and becomes scared. The women goes crawl in the corner in pain and sees this women who looks pale and is dressed in white. She starts behaving weird again and looks at something as the professor is unable to understand what's going on. The pregnant women realizes that's the women she killed because of the jealousy that token over. The women who is a ghost comes closer and closer. As she comes closer the pregnant women belly starts moving and you can see the . The professor is still confused about it as he looks at the laptop monitor. The ghost hands reaches out to he belly and the pregnant belly is shown, you can see the baby's hand is shown moving and the pregnant women screams.

Structure: This is a good start, middle and ending as the ending has a cliff-hanger. The cliff-hanger will leave the audience wanting to know what happened and be able to watch it. The audience response will be curiosity of what is going to happen next as it is building tension. The audience will have sympathy for the characters mainly for the pregnant women. The audience will also why the baby hands are almost coming out.

Planning- Storyboard- Miss B

Storyboard

This is a graphic representation that illustrates shot by shot. This is a square box with illustration or pictures represent the scene as you also take notes about the scene and what's going on and what's being said in the scrip. When creating a story board it is more easy for you to share and explain your vision to others, so the outcome for that will help you save time. helps when making a film as you see if it is more realistic and will look more professional. When creating a storyboard it will help the production team be more organised and they will understand more about the film. In my group we each made a storyboard as this will helps and guide us with film making.

Planning- Production role- Miss B

Production Role

When making a film it requires talent, creativity and ability of production team. production roles are important if you want to make a film successfully. Production roles include make-up, hair and costume, lighting, director, producer, editor, location management and sound. When including these roles it will help and create a professional film. As a group we decided what roles would be suitable for each other and if they are able to succeed their part in the role.

Definition of the different job roles-

Make up, Costume and hair:
As a make-up, costume and hair it is important as you have to be creative and practical. The artist has to make sure that the makeup can represent a character. For example a female victim make-up would be smeared eyeliner and mascara as she might of been crying or can show how weak she is, the customer could be a antagonist would wear all black or any dark colours as he/she is represented as evil, an example of a hair would be the victims hair would usually be messy as that represent that they are in a messy situation. This is one of my job role as i am creative and am very clear with linking the characters with make-up, hair and costume.

Sound:
The sound technician responsibilities are to select the appropriate sound for the film making, consulting with producers and performers to determine the sound requirements and balancing, mixing editing and enhancing of pre-recorded audio. Fatma has taken this role as she is pattinate to learn about learning mew skills when being introduced to new software.

Storyboard

The storyboard is very important as it helps to organised the film and make it even more understandable. A storyboard helps you to re-think about the film and if it would be possible to create. When having a story board you'll need to include drawings of each scenes and a notes as it will help your ideas become more realistic. This also helps to make the film professional. Moyidin is in charge of the storyboard as he has artistic skills and understand the story of the film very well.

Editor:
The editor responsibility is to produce a raw material  into the finished product tats suitable for film making. This includes camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphic and special effects. The skills required for a editor is they are determined the quality and deliver it very well. Lara will be he Editor as she has gained well  experience from her past GCSE media and knows how to achieve a desirable result.

Producer:

A producers works closely with the directors and other production as they need to direct them about what they need to do and what they can improve. They also could hold meetings withthe director to discuss the characters and scenes. Overall they deal with practical  aspects on keeping the project running smoothly. Lara is in control of the producer role as she as the ability to come up with ideas and knows how things should be represented.

Director:

A film director works closely with the creative and production team. As a director you should manage time and org anise people and space, make sure you communicate with the team., adapt a script , break down a script and attend production meetings,  should make sure that everyone k  now what there job roles are and if they are doing their jobs correctly. Fatma is doing this part of the production as she will make the project a high standard film and also has a lot of skills and qualities to become a director. She will also be able to manage the team.

Location

A location is a very important role as it will affect the film a lot. They need to find a appropriate location that will match the plot of the film and also before finding the location they will need to get permission from the police if they don't have  problem to sow the community that might dislike what we are doing around there area. As a location manager you'll need to be close with the team as they all need to agree or disagree with the location the manager has come up with. Moyhidin  as he know a lot of locations and is great with location owners,

Camera operator:
they work with digital, electrical and film cameras. They are specialist on location, where is likely to be more opportunity for creativity. They should prepare and set up equipment prior to filming, practice camera moves required for  pre-arranged shots, also work quickly since the timing is such an important factor. Fatma is the camera operator as she has good practical skills.

Lighting:

Being responsible for a lighting operator, you have to be creative and very practical as you will be creating the atmosphere for the film. They will need to avoid making mistakes and need to start planning out how to make the lighting look professional. They need to plot the lighting, establish the lighting requirements, changing the lighting between shots,as necessary, ensure all lighting are working in order to be organised and not waste time. I have decided i should be the lighting operator as i am practical and like to organised before filming as i do not want to waste time.

conclusion:
As a group we all agreed that it would be best to link our skills and ability to the production role. I also gained knowledge about these different job roles as, this is beneficial when i do my job role i will understand what is expected from me when i do makeup. hair and costume, and lighting.

MES: the costume for the pregnant women is normal clothes in her flashback. Top lighting, low lighting in the office.

Research- Questionaire and Questionaire Results - Miss B

what is a primary research?

Results from the questionnaire

This question is important as my group will think whether we should use a female victim or a male victim. The popular on was a female victim as they believe that women tend to e venerable and are a good fit to be a victim.

The audience think that it is best for censorship to not be included as it might be disturbing for them. My group will make sure that we wont include anything that might harm or influence the audience and only include appropriate things for a 15 rating, as our film will be a 15  rating.
I made sure that I would include what the audience  think about the setting in a white room as my group are planning to do it in mental institute. I asked the audience what response they would get in a mental institution and the popular answer is chilling. This is good as the film my group is making include the chilling feeling as that connects to a thriller.

This helps to figure out weather our group should involve supernatural power, gun, or knife as this may attract the audience and also bring suspense.

The advantage in the results of my questionnaire is that we have an idea what the audience expect and want from our film making and also we will know what is suitable for the audience. The disadvantages is that when I handed out the questionnaire, some people didn't complete it or was unsure about it. This made me struggle on what idea we should have when filming.

Questionnaire

Primary research is when you use your own research by yourself. When doing primary research  feel more in control of your project. But when doing primary research you are not 100% sure if it is correct. When doing primary research your trying to find out the theory match's the public opinion.

Conclusion:

I have understood why making a questionnaire and getting the results of the questionnaire is important because you will get opinions from the audience about what they are interested in and what they except from the movie. Also I have had ideas that I haven't thought of which is useful as I will share it toward my group.

Opening Credit and Typography- Mr S

Typography

Typography is a text composed to create a readable coherent, and visually satisfying whole that works invisibly, with out the awareness of the reader. Typography is a art of arranging an aspect of a design that has type in, by arrangement of size, color, font and layout. When finding a title for your film the typography should match the genre, for example the typography for a thriller film should give the audience a chilling responds by making the title look creepy and dark. For a Disney film the title should be bold and colorful.
Typography in a thriller:

Thriller: typography in " I spit on your grave" has a chilling affect and gives an idea to the audience that there will be dangers, and harmful events in the movie, The blood in the title gives me an idea that someone will die in the movie and if you look closely there is straight lines which looks mysterious. The connotation is black and red which are both dark ad evil colors. The font size is both small and big so it grabs the attention on the main word "spit " or "grave".

Trunk:
the typography for "Trunk" is the font grabs attention and also gives lots of ideas such s the blood smeared all over the title which gives an idea that there is danger, killing and evil going on in the movie, and when you look closely at the title you can see lines and holes, that could show the movie is very twisting plot and has a lot of mystery in it.

Opening credits

It is shown in movies, TV and video game. The opening credits are shown at the very beginning and listing the main members of the production. It usually comes up in a blank screen or when the opening scene start. There may or may not be accompanying music. When opening credits are built into a separate sequence of their own, the correct term is title sequence (such as the familiar James Bond and Pink Panther title sequences)The purpose of film credits is that to shows who toke part, who done the make up, who directed it ect... Its also grabbing the audience attention if a well known celebrity is in the movie more people will be interested or if a well known directed who made successful movies before has made a new one the audience would want to see it.

The feel of the opening credits mainly comes from the soundtrack as it creates the tension of the opening credits and also the font of the opening credit helps give ideas of the genre and what could happen in the film. A really good opening credits is "Seven" because it gives a lot of feels to the audience.

"Seven" opening credit gives a lot of idea about the character. It shows a lot of psychological tendencies going on in the opening credits. The sound in the opening credits is building tension and making the audience feel uncomfortable the sound gradually becomes louder. The editing in the opening credits is able to give us a better understanding of the sequence as well as the set of tone for the rest of the movie. There are a lot of colours contrasting which  can represent the fight between the good and evil. The font in the opening credit looks psychological and mysterious.

Research-Film Censorship-Mr.S

Film Censorship

The BBFC stand for the British Board Film Classification and they are the ones who classifies the cinema films that may contain any harm toward the audience, they also empower the public specifically parents to make informed viewing choices, respond to and reflect changing social attitude towards media content through proactive  public constitution and research. BBFC make sure they examine the film and edit and cut some scene that can effect the viewer. The reason why the BBFC is important to the Film industry is that it has to be appropriate for the viewers and make sure here must not be anything that does not match the rating of the film exposed and that can be harmful toward the audience. For example the BBFC will remove any discrimination, drugs that promoting and extreme violence in a 15 rating film but can accept frequent bad language and nudity but only where appropriate.

The things that can be censored in films are

  • Religion/culture/race offence
  • Abuse
  • Realism
  • Drug abuse
  • Nudity
  • Classification
  •  True events
Movies that have been censored/banned due to the violent or disturbing scenes:

Scum:
Scum is a shocking true life story about British Borstal for young offenders during the 1970s. The film include a lot of disturbing scenes such as rape, racism, violence and suicide which made the film be banned completely from television. The remade version was also banned until the court case concluded that Scum should remain distributional in the UK, The new version has gotten good critics and was praised for its accurate depiction of a brutal borstal regime.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre:

It was released in the 1974 and was banned outright in many countries and cinemas all over the world stop showing the film after receiving complaints about nature of extreme violence. The film was marked as a true even to attract the audience and through plot is  entirely fictional. The film was originally inspired by crime of notorious serial killers who collected tokens from his victims such as nipple, skin masks, and heads and kept them in his house. Research: Scream Analysis- Mr.s

Scream analysis
Scream' was created  the 1996, and is recognized for its The opening scene of 'Scream' is conventional to thriller because it includes mysterious killer who wears a mask. The opening of 'Scream' grabs the audience attention by using mise-en-scene, editing, sound and cinematography.

Mise-en-scene

Costume: When i watched the opening scene of 'scream' i saw the white clothing o the female character and instantly realized that she is a innocent character which made me create sympathy and vulnerability towards her. The character was being attacked by her killer who was wearing black cloak which contrasted her white clothing. This represent the "good and evil" just by telling the clothing. Also the villain was wearing a mask that would hide his identity. This makes the character very mysterious and also makes the audience engage even more by plotting who it is. The female character boyfriend clothing was used to create stereotype by wearing a football jacket and jeans to present his "jock" status. Lighting: this helps create the mood of 'scream' through manipulating, lighting makes extremely distinct impact. In the opening scene the intensities helps to create a suspenseful mood which will make the audience engage. A lot of the scene was soft lighting and high key lighting, then the  hen both of the bodies are revealed to the audience after being mutilated, hard lighting is present to bring out the details in the horrific murders. The lighting used too show the murder of the victims boyfriend was low angles which reveals his features, both side ad back lighting, but does not not revel the whole body in details just the main features. The lighting has grab the attention to a particular object, person, emotion or gesture, Editing: the timing between each are vital to create tense opening scene. . A variety of close up, long and tracking shots are used when edited together to create an understandable narrative. When the girl found out about the killer the editing turned faster and the shots was quick. Body-language: it is important too have the right body language to create feeling towards the character such as the girl in the scene is weak and she looks fragile as she doesn't know what to do. She also shows that she doesn't know what to do with the killer as she is running around the house. The Iconography and setting can give the audience a lot of imagination and ideas of whats happening in the movie. the iconography in the opening scene are knife, popcorn and telephone. The setting is in a house.

sound: there are sounds such as parallel was used when the women was screaming when being attacked by the killer. Off screen sounds is used when the bell was ringing, i know it is off screen because we cant see it but it makes sense. On screen sound was used when the popcorn was being cooked.

Cinematography: the camera movements such as  reaction/zoom shots are to capture the changes in the character for example when the victim changes her mood and facial expression when the killer on the phone scares her. The camera movements such as tilt shows the main objects in the house to give signs to the audience on whats going to happen and there

are several off long shot when she is running around the house away from the killer.
