Film Censorship


The BBFC stand for the British Board Film Classification and they are the ones who classifies the cinema films that may contain any harm toward the audience, they also empower the public specifically parents to make informed viewing choices, respond to and reflect changing social attitude towards media content through proactive  public constitution and research. BBFC make sure they examine the film and edit and cut some scene that can effect the viewer. The reason why the BBFC is important to the Film industry is that it has to be appropriate for the viewers and make sure here must not be anything that does not match the rating of the film exposed and that can be harmful toward the audience. For example the BBFC will remove any discrimination, drugs that promoting and extreme violence in a 15 rating film but can accept frequent bad language and nudity but only where appropriate.

The things that can be censored in films are

  • Religion/culture/race offence 
  • Abuse
  • Realism
  • Drug abuse 
  • Nudity
  • Classification
  •  True events
Movies that have been censored/banned due to the violent or disturbing scenes: 

Scum: 
Scum is a shocking true life story about British Borstal for young offenders during the 1970s. The film include a lot of disturbing scenes such as rape, racism, violence and suicide which made the film be banned completely from television. The remade version was also banned until the court case concluded that Scum should remain distributional in the UK, The new version has gotten good critics and was praised for its accurate depiction of a brutal borstal regime.



The Texas Chainsaw Massacre:

It was released in the 1974 and was banned outright in many countries and cinemas all over the world stop showing the film after receiving complaints about nature of extreme violence. The film was marked as a true even to attract the audience and through plot is  entirely fictional. The film was originally inspired by crime of notorious serial killers who collected tokens from his victims such as nipple, skin masks, and heads and kept them in his house. The film became the highest grossing independent film of all time, for a short time as it is the most influenced films in history. 


The Exorcists:

By far this film is known to be the scariest horror movie of all time as it has effect the popular culture. It was released on the 1973 and has been banned over 30 years as it horrifying scary and some cases for religious reasons.The film has created a results from the audience as they has to be treated with paramedics. The story is about a young girl who becomes possessed by a demon. The events surrounding the girl's behavior and subsequent exorcism make up the main plot line. The Exorcist is a psychological thriller and is a clever subliminal messaging to terrify audience. This is a 18 rating film  according to the BBFC.
